This guide is a compiled list of the top-performing 2008-model year midsize SUVs in J.D. Power and Associates' key automotive research studies. The studies include the 2007 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), the 2007 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, and the 2007 Initial Quality Study (IQS). All models are listed alphabetically by manufacturer.
Ford Edge: Launched as a 2007 model, the Ford Edge captured top honors among midsize SUVs in the 2007 APEAL study, which measures owners' delight with their vehicle's performance and design. Ford's crossover wagon also earned a "Top Safety Pick" designation by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). For 2008, Ford's Sync hands-free, voice-controlled communications/entertainment system is available, and the optional navigation system gains voice activation. A new power liftgate is optional, and a new Limited series joins the SE and SEL models. What Ford calls "class-exclusive" 20-inch wheels now are offered. Available with front-drive or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD), the Edge uses a 265-hp V-6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission.

GMC Acadia: Cousin to the Buick Enclave and Saturn Outlook, the GMC Acadia ranked among the top three models in its segment in the 2007 APEAL study. For 2008, traction/stability control with rollover mitigation is standard. Available "intelligent" AWD has been enhanced, and all Acadias have XM satellite radio. A backup camera is newly available, and a new Panic Brake Assist feature has been installed. Seating up to 8, the Acadia comes in two trim levels with a 275-hp V-6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission. A dual-pane sunroof is available....
