These midsize SUVs are designed to deliver comfort and utility at a price that won't break the bank. With gasoline and hybrid offerings, their front- or all-wheel-drive powertrain configurations are engineered for additional safety in inclement weather, but none of our top-ranked midsize SUVs is intended for heavy off-road use.
This 2009 Midsize SUVs Buyer's Guide is a compiled list of the top-performing midsize SUVs from J.D. Power and Associates three key automotive studies. The studies include the 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), the 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, and the 2008 Initial Quality Study (IQS). In addition, we have also noted any models in the guide that have earned "5-star" crash test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), or have been chosen as "Top Safety Picks" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). All models are listed alphabetically by manufacturer.
2009 Buick Enclave
The Buick Enclave is a luxury crossover SUV launched as a 2008 model. It is built on GM's Lambda platform, shared with the GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook, and the Chevrolet Traverse. The 4-door Enclave may be configured to seat up to 8 passengers"allowing it to replace larger SUVs and minivans in many households. The standard engine is a 3.6-liter V-6 powering the front wheels, with all-wheel drive optional. For 2009, the front-wheel drive Enclave's EPA fuel economy ratings are 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. In our 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, recognizing owner delight with the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles, the Enclave ranked highest in its segment. In addition, the Buick Enclave performed admirably in crash tests. It was rewarded a "Top Safety Pick" designation by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it received "5-star" crash test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). For 2009, the Buick Enclave receives a new standard 288-hp, direct-injection V-6 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. In addition, two new colors have been added to the lineup.
