2009 Mini Cooper
The Mini Cooper arrived on our shores as a 2002 model. Now in its second generation (last redesigned in 2007), the Cooper lineup includes hatchbacks, convertibles and wagons. Two different powerplants are offered for this sporty front-wheel-drive model. The standard engine is a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder, while the optional engine (on the "S" models) is a turbocharged version. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, but there is a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters on the options list (the EPA rated this powertrain combination at 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway). The suspension is independent, front and rear, and tuned for performance. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock control (ABS) are standard on all models, as is stability control. In our 2008 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, designed to measure consumer delight with the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles, the Mini Cooper ranked highest in its segment. While the standard Mini lineup remains unchanged for 2009, the automaker is rumored to be adding a small crossover next year, and an updated convertible (based on the current model) will be unveiled.
