Avis Rent a Car
Avis Rent a Car is a car rental company with its headquarters in Parsippany, New Jersey and is part of the Avis Budget Group, along with Budget Rent a Car and Budget Truck Rental. The company was established in 1946 by Warren Avis at Willow Run Airport in Detroit. More locations were set up in Miami and by 1953 the company was operating in Europe, Canada and Mexico. As of today, Avis has over 4,000 branches throughout the world. In 1972, the ITT Corporation, who had bought Avis in 1965, spun Avis off as a public company and then five years later the company entered an agreement with General Motors and began featuring GM cars in its fleet. Today Avis still primarily rents GM automobiles, but also includes other brands such as Hyundai, Kia, Ford and Chrysler.
The Avis fleet is comprised of a number of sizes ranging from subcompacts to full size cars. Different specialty cars like the Chevrolet Camaro SS, Ford Flex, and Jeep Wrangler can also be rented. Several luxury cars, SUVs, mini vans, convertibles and passenger vans are available as well, to suit any customer’s needs. And for the environmentally conscious, Avis also has hybrid vehicles in their fleet so that customers can lessen their carbon emissions. Renters can choose from 2- or 4-door vehicles and most come standard with AM/FM radio, air conditioning, and automatic transmission.
As part of its services, Avis has the Avis Cares program, which is designed to prepare drivers for their trips and ensure their safety and a stress-free experience. The first component is Avis Access, services and products for physically challenged customers. The company offers mobility scooter rentals, panoramic mirrors, easy access buses and more to make traveling easy for those with disabilities. Other components of the Avis Cares program include child safety and booster seats upon request, the On Star Safe & Sound service in certain vehicles, where2 GPS Navigation portable systems, mywhere2.com trip planning online tool, WeDriveU chauffeurs, and Sirius|XM Radio in many Avis cars.
In addition to those services, Avis also makes tolls easier to deal with through its eToll electronic protection. This program enables customers to make use of fast lanes at tolls by automatically charging the customer’s credit card for the amount of the toll and a daily service fee. There’s no charge for Avis eToll unless the customer uses it. Another additional service is the Mini Lease program, designed for those who need a rental car for an extended period of time. Avis will lease cars for two months or more and offers benefits like low rates and 24 hour roadside assistance through this service. Furthermore, Avis has also established a system to help customers offset their carbon footprints. The company works with Carbonfund.org, a nonprofit company that promotes carbon-reducing projects, and customers can make donations to offset their carbon usage.
Avis’s membership services give members special benefits and privileges for joining. When customers register, their information is stores in a Wizard profile so that it doesn’t need to be entered each time the customer makes a reservation. The next level of membership is the preferred customer. Preferred customers can skip lines and paperwork at rental locations, get access to low mileage cars, and can have their rental preferences saved for future reference. This service for frequent travelers and membership is free for anyone who wants to join. Avis First, yet another membership service, is an upgraded version of Avis Preferred, available to those who have 12 or more paid rentals or 35 or more rental days in one calendar year. The company will also send out e-mail deals and an e-Newsletter about international promotions and special offers that are good at locations around the world.
Businesses can enroll in the Avis Corporate Awards Program to receive deals and discounts only available to members. Special rates for rentals and the ability to earn rewards also come with business membership. And if a company requires five or more cars Avis offers customized packages to meet the needs of large groups. Avis also handles special travel requirements for casts and crews involved in entertainment and productions. Film crews and traveling productions can make use of their own Avis representative who will be on hand for productions and will make sure the customers get low group rates with free unlimited mileage, good rates on site inspections, and a complimentary car rewards program. In addition, military members and government agencies can take part in Avis’s business programs. When government or military customers travel on official business within the United States they are given free collision/LDW insurance coverage, no additional or underage driver fees, free unlimited mileage, and competitive rental rates.
