Formula 280 SS Rochester NY

The Formula 280 SS, while built much differently than the FasTechs, benefits from many of these lessons learned. The builder also evidently thinks of this 28 footer as a mini yacht, considering the quality of components seen everywhere from the cabin to the engine room.

Model Introduction
The Formula 280 SS, while built much differently than the FasTechs, benefits from many of these lessons learned. The builder also evidently thinks of this 28 footer as a mini yacht, considering the quality of components seen everywhere from the cabin to the engine room.

The attractive Formula 280 SS can best be summed up as a high-end performance family day boat. Most of the boat's length is given over to topside space in the cockpit, though the cabin has the basics for the occasional overnighter. With twin sterndrive power, the boat makes it to the mid-50 mph range, but it's clearly designed with a focus on a comfortable rough water ride, which requires plenty of deadrise and a fine entry, rather than sheer speed, and this is to the builder's credit. The 2800 is great for day cruising and watersports, and is as good as it gets in its class.

Construction
The Formula 280 SS starts with a 1.5-oz. skin coat of chop wet out in vinylester resin to prevent osmotic blistering. This provides much better protection against blistering because the barrier coat with the vinylester resin that resists osmosis is much thicker than merely spraying a coat of vinylester resin over the gelcoat. A DCPD resin blend designed for minimal shrinkage on curing follows through the rest of the laminate. A series of stitched (vs. woven) fiberglass reinforcements follow. The hull has a plywood stringer system that's encapsulated in fiberglass and tabbed to the hull bottom and sides. The bottom is solid fiberglass, while the hull sides are cored with Divinycell foam to add stiffness. The transom is plywood, also encapsulated in fiberglass. ...
